Verhaal

huwelijk

Door:

Rebecca was getrouwd met David van Gelderen (Zwolle, 28.6.1911 - 9.3.1981)

On 15.9.1948 David married Rebecca de Haan (Bep) (26.3.1920 – 23.12.1999) in her birthplace, Hilversum.
They made their home in Zwolle and during their first years there they lived in an apartment with quite a
steep staircase over the synagogue in the Schoutenstraat. Bep was a caring woman with a strongly
developed social conscience. She always donated something to the beggars who came to the house
by the synagogue. If they came on a Friday, she gave no money but invited them to share the Shabbat
meal with the family. They had two daughters. Clara Johanna (1.8.1949 ) was born while they lived in
the house over the synagogue. One day Bep fell down the stairs with her almost three year old toddler.
She tried to shield her daughter as well as possible with her body and succeeded very well as the little
Clara remarked on arrival at the bottom of the stairs: “Mom, can we do that once more?” Josephine Chaja
(27.10.1952) was born in another apartment, this time there were no steep stairs.
David was employed as a butcher in the kosher butcher’s shop owned by the Marcus family in Zwolle.
When, in 1957, Mr. Marcus decided to open a branch of the business in Amsterdam, the van Gelderen
family moved to the capital. Sophie Rozeband – van Straten (Fie) missed the van Gelderen family very
much when they moved to Amsterdam. She missed them even more after the death of David’s mother,
Clara van Gelderen – Cortissos, who had been an aunt of her late husband.
Bep suffered from Alzheimer’s during the last years of her life an died in Beth Shalom in Amsterdam on
23.12.1999. She was buried at Muiderberg
