Concentration camp Sachsenhausen, located near Oranienburg north of Berlin, was opened by the SS in 1936. Originally it was used to imprison mostly political adversaries and criminals. Later also Jews and other persecuted minorities were imprisoned in Sachsenhausen. At the start of 1945 Sachsenhausen held more than 11.000 Jewish prisoners.
