Walter's father Ewald Handwein owned a sign factory in Berlin. Since his father is marked as deceased on his Amsterdam Card at the time he emigrated on 18.10.1938, and since his father is no longer listed in the Berlin Addressbook at that time, he probably died 1938-1939. When hs mother Hedwig Handwein-Löwenthal died is unknown. The Handwein family lived at Mühlenstr. 32 in Berlin-Friedrichshain. Max Hermann Georg Handwein was probably Walter's uncle. He, like Ewald, owned a sign factory in Berlin-Friedrichshain. Max was deported to Theresienstadt Ghetto on 10.01.1944, but luckily survived.
