Josef was a refugee from Germany: he arrived in the Netherlands on December 7th, 1938. First he stayed in the quarantine facility in Amsterdam, in December 1938 he went to live in Arnhem (Huize Sonsbeek), and from there in February 1940 to Wieringen.
His parents were on their way to Rhodesia. He was supposed to go to the US with a Kindertransport.
His mother was Helene Rothschild, born in 1891 in Alsfeld, his father was Henry, born in 1875 in Darmstadt, which was also the city where Josef came from.
