Schayja came to the Netherlands in December 1938. He lived in the Dommelhuis in Eindhoven and for a short while in Wieringen (but he was not a Zionist) but he went back to Eindhoven, where he was trained to be a cabinet maker.
Schayja had many medical mishaps.
In early 1940 it looked like he might emigrate to the US any moment.
His parents were still in Hamburg and longing to see their son. In 1942 Schayja asked to return to Germany, but this was turned down.
His father was a war invalid. I do not know his parents names.
