Johan Hartog werd per trein vanuit kamp Vught rechtstreeks naan Auschwitz gedeporteerd op 15 november 1943 samen met zijn ouders. De dag van het transport was ook de laatste keer dat hij zijn moeder zag.

Johan Hartog heeft het kamp overleefd nadat hij te werk was gesteld in de Janina Gruben, een kolenmijn vlak bij Auschwitz. Daar is hij op 27 januari 1945 bevrijd door de Russen.
