Jacques Roos and his family

The family Roos lived at 90a Essenburgsingel in Rotterdam. Jacques Roos was appointed as a special courier by the Rotterdam precinct of the Jewish Council, but when even the staff of the Jewish Council were called up, the family went into hiding in Veenendaal. Jacques Roos and his wife Rebecca Sanders were staying with the Vink family in the Da Costastraat. Their son, Samuel Hans Roos (nickname Hans) stayed with the Wassink family. Every Wednesday, the parents went to visit their son.
In the neighbourhood of de Da Costastraat, people were talking about the Jewish people in hiding. It hence became too risky for them there. They decided to try and escape to Spain with the help of an underground organisation. Money and jewellery was sewn into the seams and shoulder pads of their clothing and the parents took their son on a journey. In May 1943, Wassink learned that they had arrived safely in The Hague. In June 1943, it all went wrong. The family was taken off the train in Limburg. It transpired that the organisation supervising their escape to Spain was a Nazi set-up to locate Jews who had gone into hiding.
