Levie and Elisabeth Staal owned an import and export business. In 1942 they moved to Ermelo, because it would be safer there. When the family was ordered to report for deportation they went into hiding in Ermelo. Later the mother of Elisabeth Staal, Betje Morpurgo, joined them. When they got a visit from a friend who also was in hiding, he was followed by policemen from Putten and they were all arrested. One of the children managed to escape.
