Abraham Jacob Engelsman, a waste products merchant, was married to Esther Kohn, Hungarian by birth and a naturalized Dutch citizen. Prior to their deportation, they left their valuables with a neighbour, requesting that these items be donated to invalid Jews who survived the war, if they did not survive themselves. Their request was carried out. The couple also owned a few Torah scrolls and menorahs, which they buried along the banks of the Rhine. These possessions were never found.
