Alfred Aussen and Paula Aron lived at Rathausstrasse 22-24 in Leer, Germany, in the same building as the business run by Paula’s father, Louis Aron. When Liesel was born, her father went to Leer’s town hall to register her birth. The official refused to register the name Liesel. A Jew with Dutch nationality was not allowed to use a beautiful German name like that. But Alfred would not take no for an answer, and eventually he was allowed to register his daughter under the name of Lisel. The Aussen family lived an isolated existence in Leer. In 1938 they fled to Winschoten, followed a year later by Paula’s parents and sister.
