Joseph Abas was married to Catharina Trompetter. He studied medicine in Amsterdam, where he sat for his medical finals on 27 June 1908. He then specialized in obstetrics and gynaecology. He lived at 33 Jan Luykenstraat in Amsterdam and had practices at 97 Sarphatistraat and on the Daniel Willinkplein. The couple had a child who survived the war.
