David van Dien was married to Roosje de Winter. He and his wife had five children: Judith, Phillipus Nathan, Jansje, Rosaline and a child who survived the war in hiding. His daughter Judith never married and lived with her parents until the deportations.
David van Dien was certified as an estate agent in 1912. On 1 July 1912 he opened the D. van Dien, Verzekeringen insurance office at 77 Hooftstraat in Alphen aan den Rijn. The office was later renamed Vereenigd Alphensch Assurantiekantoor D. van Dien. His son Phillippus Nathan and the child who survived the war joined his firm. In 1934 the firm became a limited liability company. The Van Diens were also auctioneers.
David van Dien held various social offices. He co-founded the gymnastics association Hou Vast and figured prominently within the Jewish community as chairman of the synagogue board. He was also chairman of the association Lekach Tov.
David van Dien lived with his wife Roosje and their daughter Judith at 13 Stationsstraat in Alphen. On 18 August 1942 the Feldgendarmerie searched his house with a view toward its confiscation by the Niederländische Grundstückverwaltung. The house had six rooms, including four that with heating, a spacious garden, a basement and a large kitchen. The house had running water, gas and electricity. After their home was seized, the family had to move. The home was turned into an officer's residence. David van Dien and his family moved in with the Aardewerk couple at the service residence of the Jewish community at 10 Rijnkade in Alphen, where David van Dien paid to have a lavatory built and indoor plumbing installed.
Judith van Dien was a chemist and owned a chemist's shop with her sister Jansje on the Van Manderloostraat. She was deported with her parents to Auschwitz via Westerbork.
