A friend of the Sanders family remembers them as ‘very nice people’. When Henri Joseph Sanders and his family received the deportation summons, this friend’s parents offered to take them into hiding. But Esther Sanders-Frank replied that as a former nurse, she would be able to make herself useful, and that the family would get through their ordeal. The family friend later wrote: ‘We kept their Jewish books and gramophone records for them until the end of the war. After the war these items were donated to the synagogue in Lekstraat.’
