Levie de Jong and Debora Zegerius had four children, three of whom resided at another address. One of their children, Sophia, did not survive the war.
Levie de Jong and Debora Zegerius met each other in an institute for the deaf in Groningen. Levie was more than nine years older, but waited until Debora was old enough to marry her.
Levie had gone deaf at an early age, and Debora was born deaf. Both were active in Amsterdam’s ‘deaf and dumb’ community. This community had its own social clubs and drama groups.
The whole family communicated in sign language. This was different from the language used by deaf people today.
