Mozes (Max) van der Veen owned a shop with personnel in Rotterdam, where one could buy linen and similar stuff. According to tradition he was a bit of a difficult man. The family had a nanny who was also part of the family. Mother Emma Hart always was very sweet to her. The nanny took the children, for example, to the Rotterdam Zoo or to visit their relatives. Often she took the children to her own skipper family.
When rumours about a raid went around, the nanny sent her niece to the Van der Veen family to ask them to go to her. Mozes van der Veen did not want to hear it and would have said: "If we go', we 'go' all together".
