Hartog Cohen was the son of Israel Cohen and Mietje Worms. He married Sara Knegje in Woerden in 1882. She was the daughter of Elisabeth Knegje.

Hartog and Sara Cohen had nine children, of which eight survived the war. Sara was transported to Westerbork together with her eldest son Israel and his wife Betsie in July 1942. All three perished in Auschwitz.
