Before the war, the Cohen family lived in the village of Voorburg, on the Parkweg. The children went to grade school there, at the Montessori school. Alice and Herman were the children of Willem David Cohen and his first wife, whom he divorced in the thirties. Sylvia was his second wife. The family moved to The Hague around 1936-1937.
