Joseph de Vries used the stage name Maupie de Vries when he performed as a transformation comedian and night club singer. During the 1930s he and his wife Jopie Goos performed as the comedian couple known as 'Maupie and Joanita de Vries'. He played in revues and operettas with the companies Meyer Hamel Revue, Vrije Produktie/Ad hoc Produktie and the Nieuwe Karseboomrevue.
