Marcel Rudolf Kahn, known as Rudi, fled from Germany to the Netherlands with his mother in 1934. They settled in Amersfoort. He married Flora (known as Floortje) Härtz, who had moved with her parents from Harderwijk to Amersfoort in the 1920s. The couple had a son, Emanuel. Rudi learned the baker's trade from Bennie Cohen on the Langegracht. Afterwards, Rudi and Floortje opened their own bakery on the Kamp, just past the Coninckstraat.
