Siegmund Cohen was married to Olga Goudberg. They lived in Burgsteinfurt, where their only daughter was born. This daughter married Siegfried Weinberg in Germany. In 1936 Siegmund Cohen, his wife Olga, his married daughter and his son-in-law Siegfried moved to the Netherlands. They stayed with relatives in The Hague at first and then settled in Alphen aan den Rijn, where the two couples rented a house at 4 Javastraat. Siegmund Cohen and his son-in-law Siegfried purchased a sours factory in Ter Aar. Business was good.

Under the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, their home on the Javastraat was requisitioned as an officer's residence by the Ortskommandantur in Leiden on 14 April 1942. The two couples had to leave the premises and abandon their furniture. The moved to 31 Van Boetzelaerstraat in Alphen aan den Rijn, where they were picked up and transferred to Westerbork during the raid on 30 September 1942.
