Jacob Manuel (Jaap) de Groot and his family went into hiding in Spijk, near Gorinchem. On 27 januari 1944 there was a raid led by 'Schalkhaarders' (Dutch policemen who received their training in Schalkhaar from the nazis). During this raid the family was caught.
Jacob was brought to the prison at the 'Haagse Veer' in Rotterdam, together with someone else who had gone into hiding. When this other person was brought to camp Amersfoort mid February Jacob still was in that prison.
