Max Gompes and Kaatje Schoonhoed tried to find a hiding place in Arnhem, but none of their acquaintances was willing to accept them. A busker finally offered them a place to sleep, but there were no facilities to remain there. They stayed in guest houses at high prices and in the course of the days they lost their luggage. Eventually they ended up in a "village" of hidden persons in the forests of Vierhouten. They were discovered. Kaatje died from exhaustion and her diabetes, Max was killed by grenades, on the edge of her grave.
