Matthieu van Gelderen was a son of the older brother of Max Jacques van Gelderen. From 1937 onwards he lived on the Valeriusterras in Amsterdam. He refused to be registered as a Jew and became part of the resistance. He was betrayed and caught in August or September 1944.

A memorial plaque listing the names of staff members who did not survive the war has been affixed in the former residence of the director of the Stoomweverij Nijverheid (part of the Van Gelderen family business) at 2 Nijverheidstraat in Enschede. Eight of those listed were Jews, including Matthieu Leonard van Gelderen.

Matthieu van Gelderen died during the German evacuation of the concentration camp Oranienburg in April 1945.
