Hans Marius Koopal was arrested on 30 September 1944. With five others, he was shot dead in the night of 3 to 4 October 1944 in the Engelse Werk in Zwolle. According to a witness, the six prisoners were made to dig their own grave and were subsequently shot dead two by two in the dug out hole. With the third shot, the gun misfired. Hans Marius Koopal tried to make use of the ensuing confusion to escape. His attempt failed.
