Biography

About Herbert Herzstein

Herbert Herzstein was the son of Louis Herzstein and Adele Jacobs. He had two brothers (of whom one died at a young age) and a sister. The family lived in Nuttlar in Germany. At the end of the 1930's Herbert and his father were forced by the nazis to work at the loam-pits in Brigge, making bricks.
In 1940 Herbert Herzstein managed to leave for studies in the Netherlands. He probably had the right papers. He lived with the family of his aunt Riekchen (Erika) Jacobs in Amsterdam.
On June 11th of 1941 he was rounded up during the second major raid in Amsterdam. He was sent to Mauthausen where he perished (possibly on the "Stairs of Death") only a few months later, in September.
