Alfred Schnell was married to Eva Jolowicz. The couple lived at 108 Koppelweg in Amersfoort. Her mother-in-law, Jeny Schnell-Friedmann lived in with them. Eva Schnell-Jolowicz was a primary school teacher. Alfred Schnell was a chemist and consultant with regard to patenting issues in his field of expertise.
The couple had gone into hiding, first in Amersfoort and then in Oldebroek. Through betrayal, they were caught on 3 October 1944 and they were executed in the night of 3 to 4 October together with four others in the Engelse Werk in Zwolle. According to an eye witnesses of the execution, the prisoners had to dig their own grave first and were then shot, two by two, man and woman, in the hole they had dug.
