Maurits Polak, also known as Maup, was born on 8 March 1904 in Amsterdam. He lived with his father, his mother, and his younger brothers and sisters on a second-floor apartment in Swammerdamstraat. He grew up in a family with thirteen children.
Maurits Polak was a hawker, whose wares included shaving supplies and fancy goods. He and his brother David produced their own brand of razor blade, called Jan Plank. They bought the blades at Simon Kleinkramer, a wholesaler’s on Snoekjesgracht. In 1932 Maurits Polak was married. He and his wife had two children. In August 1940, the family moved to Huizerstraatweg 11 in Naarden. One day, Maurits Polak was arrested at the market on Amstelveld in Amsterdam for showing disrespect to members of the NSB. He was sent to Schoorl and then to Amersfoort concentration camp. From there, Maurits Polak was sent on to Neuengamme.
