Jacob de Haan was unmarried. He was a seaman. He worked in the resistance for the Dutch communist party (CPN). On 15 July 1941 he was caught in Amsterdam and imprisoned on the Weteringschans in Amsterdam, from where he was deported to Mauthausen via the camps at Schoorl and Amersfoort. Jacob de Haan was a brother of Philip de Haan.
