Nathan Frederik Israël was the son of Abraham Israël and Schoontje Cohen. His first wife died in 1937, after which he was married again, to a non-Jewish woman. The four children born of the two marriages survived the war.
Nathan Frederik Israël was involved in the resistance. On 15 August several members of the Landwacht stormed the building where he was in hiding. They were led by Robertson, who was Rost van Tonningen’s secretary. Nathan Israël is said to have been shot dead at the spot. A few days later he was buried anonymously at Noorder Begraafplaats, a cemetery in Amsterdam. In 1951 his remains were reburied.
In Amsterdam’s Kadoelen district, a street is named after Nathan F. Israël. The following memorial text is added to the street name:
'Nathan Frederik Israël, born 30 August 1904. Took part in the armed resistance. Produced the illegal resistance newspaper De Waarheid in the northern district of Amsterdam. Died in a gunfight in Amsterdam on 16 August 1944.’
