Jacques van Praag was the son of Maurits van Praag en Judith Engelsman. In 1942 he was steward on board of the Tjiliboet, a Dutch steamship that originaly traded on Java, China and Japan.
The Tjiliboet left the port of Swansea (Wales) on 7 November 1942, with the destination Cape Town. She was last seen by other ships in the convoy on the 28th. A German broadcast some weeks later claimed that she had been sunk by a submarine.
