Jacob Groenteman was a son of Barend Groenteman and Sophia Wijnschenk. He married in Amsterdam on 19 September 1894 to Hanna Haamerslag, a daughter of David Haamerslag and Elisabeth Gans. The family had many children, among them Barend, Sophia, Roosje, Sara, Carel, Abraham, Juda, Louis, Arnold, Gerrit, Tobias, Elisabeth and Mozes and two children died in childhood.
