About Harrold Deen

Harrold Deen was a student of the Middelbare Technische School in Haarlem, The Netherlands. He travelled daily between his home in Loosdrecht and the school, via Amsterdam, and was well aware of the dangers Dutch Jews were exposed to. His daily journey was of great concern to his family. In July 1942 the Deen family was “summoned” to present themselves for forced labour in Germany. Upon this demand Harrold and his sister Rebecca left by bicycle to find a place they could hide. Harrold and Rebecca found refuge at a farm in the Haarlemmermeer, but because of treason (presumably by a farm hand who was on bad terms with his boss) they were caught. In July 1943 they were transported through Westerbork to Sobibor. There is a memorial stone in Oud Loosdrecht for Harrold and Rebecca Deen.
