Aaltje Sleutelberg got married on 8 May 1895 in Delfzijl to the merchant Hartog Ekstein. The couple had at least two children: Comprecht and Goline. Hartog Ekstein died in 1916.
In 1927 Aaltje Ekstein-Sleutelberg moved from Middelstum to Leeuwarden. May be she moved there because her married daughter already lived there. But Aaltje kept an indipendent household. While she was looking for the right place to settle she moved eleven times within ten years. Her last address was Droevendal 7 in Leeuwarden.
