Ester Levitus was the eldest child of a couple of whom the father survived the war, and the mother, Roosje Engelander, died in 1922. Ester was born at 14 Batavierstraat in Amsterdam. When she was 2, the family moved to The Hague. After her mother died, Ester was sent to the Jewish children's home De Bergstichting in Laren. She was trained to work as a domestic servant there. When she came of age, she found a job at the Jewish home for the elderly Aulida in Arnhem, where she advanced to become head of housekeeping.
In Arnhem she met her husband Levie Bacharach. After they were married, they settled at 23 Abrikozenweg in Apeldoorn, where their daughter Gretha Bacharach was born on 14 March 1939. Following the death of her husband Levie Bacharach, Ester moved with her daughter Gretha to 6 Kleine Velderslaan in Apeldoorn. In late October 1942, they were removed from their home and deported to Auschwitz via Westerbork.
Photocopies remain of the birth certificate of Ester Levitus, the marriage certificate of Levie Bacharach and Ester Levitus and the birth certificate of Gretha Bacharach.
