Salomon Chelem was a son of Itzik Chelem and Hanna Behr. He married 9 June 1938 in Amsterdam to Cato Goudeket, daughter of Benjamin Goudeket and Reintje van Amerongen. The couple had one son: Iwan Siegfried.
Salomon's siblings were Sila, Lea, Suzanna, survivor of the Holocaust who was married to Meijer Denneboom, Gaye and Fride

The district inspector of price control in The Hague requested that Salomon Chelem, 'a dealer in leatherwares, an alien and a Jew', residing at 147 Sarphatistraat in Amsterdam, be located and detained. He was suspected of violating price regulations.
