In 1913 Benno Friedberg moved to Düsseldorf to complete secondary school there. He studied medicine in Munich, Cologne and Berlin, where he sat for his medical finals on 30 June 1926. Afterwards his positions included that of registrar at the Stadtkrankenhaus Görlitz [municipal hospital]. In December he registered as a family doctor in Koblenz. He took his PhD degree in medicine at the university of Bonn on 30 May 1929.
Benno Friedberg came to the Netherlands in 1940. On 7 June 1940 he sat for his Dutch medical finals in Leiden. He opened a practice at 26 Harteveltstraat in Scheveningen. His last address was 13 Plantage Franselaan in Amsterdam. Benno Friedberg was married to Esther Hinde Weg.
From 1 August he worked as a physician at the Zentralstelle für jüdische Auswanderung [centre for Jewish emigration]. He was also active in the resistance and used the alias Franssen. His work included forging identity cards. In late 1942 he was betrayed and arrested and sent to Vught via Scheveningen and Amersfoort. He was transferred to Auschwitz via Amersfoort in November 1943.
On 4 September 1942 the internist J.Groen wrote Dr. Friedberg: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank you very much for the way you managed to liberate the family of my patient (Mrs. Vigevano). I also hear many wonderful things about the way you performed the difficult task on the Adema van Scheltemaplein and want to tell me how much I appreciate you." This letter remains.
