Jan de Jong was a son of Salomo de Jong and his first wife.

Jan de Jong, had just managed to finish his studies in Amsterdam as a teacher in history and as such still taught at Jewish schools in Arnhem and 's-Hertogenbosch. Then he went into hiding. He was hidden in several different places and finally was caught in Ommen and almost immediately was sent to Sobibor.

The Arnhem police commissioner requested that Jan de Jong, residing in Arnhem, be located, detained and brought to trial. He was suspected of having changed his place of residence without the required authorization. This description referred to Jews who had gone into hiding.
