Jakob Rosenblatt was born as the fifth of seven children in the family of Hirsch Rosenblatt and Fradie Linczyc. The family emigrated to Vienna where Jakob was trained as a goldsmith. Before he came to Amsterdam he worked for a short time in Levice, Slovakia. In Amsterdam he worked for some wellknown jewellers before he started his own business. He had a small room in the Diamond Exchange where he repaired things. Also he made jewellery.
Jakob Rosenblatt met Berta Lustbader when he was in Vienna for a vacation. They married in 1935 and went to Amsterdam to live there.
It was told that he was a jovial person who regularly played cards with his neighbours. At the same time he was described as a silent man and a loner. Probably he came more and more in a retiring position because of the bad political circumstances.
Jakob Rosenblatt was an intelligent man who read a lot in German as well as in English and Dutch. He was known as a zionist, like the rest of his relatives. He was concerned about the fate of the Jews in Eastern-Europe who had fled for the nazi’s. In daily life he was a conservative Jew. He was a member of the Dutch-Jewish Congregation and he did not work on Saturday and the Jewish festivals. He was a member of an organisation for Eastern-European Jews. Because he had objections on principle he was not a member of a funeral association.
