About Jacques Benjamin van den Borg

Jacques Benjamin van den Borg studied medicine in Amsterdam and sat for his medical finals on 28 November 1903. He obtained his doctoral degree on 31 March 1903 in Amsterdam on the thesis 'Statistical and other contributions to the knowledge of astigmatism'. Jacques Benjamin van den Borg specialised in ophthalmology. After study trips to Berlin and Vienna, he settled in Rotterdam at 85 Witte de Withstraat. In Rotterdam, he also had a practice in the outpatients' clinic at 72 Maaskade and in the Central Clinic at the Goudse Singel.

Van den Borg was a co-founder of the Medical Association and governor of the Rotterdamsch Lyceum. He took his own life. H. Burgerhout described him as 'a good medic, but also a very compassionate man.* On the outside, he was a cheerful man with a level-headed outlook, consoled by his sense of humour. His good friends nevertheless knew that, underneath, he had a very melancholic nature'.
