Alfred Bernard Spanjaard had emigrated to the United States in the twenties. In 1932 his Dutch father asked him to return to take over his antique shop. When the war broke out he was drafted for the Dutch army, but after the Netherlands capitulated he returned to his family.
In July 1942 he was arrested during a raid and taken to Westerbork. Because he was the father of an American child, he was released again by mediation of the Swiss consulate. In April 1943 the family was arrested anyway and sent to Westerbork. They stayed there for a month, were then temporarily moved to camp Amersfoort and then returned again in Westerbork. In February 1944 the family was deported to Bergen-Belsen. When digging mass graves Alfred was almost beaten to death and did not recover anymore. He and his family were exchanged for German prisoners of war in February 1945 in Konstanz at the German-Swiss border. He died the day after in Switzerland and lies buried there.
