Louis Aletrino was a son of David Aletrino and Catharina Gesina Louisa Martens. He worked as a journalist for the Dutch NRC and for New York Times, among other newspapers. In 1941 he was stationed in Bucharest.
On 23 January 1941 Louis Aletrino was arrested in Bucharest because of putative political activities. He was first held at the Sigurantza prison, and later at the POW-camp Târgu Jiu. Eventually he died in Mauthausen.
On the memorial tablet of Louis Aletrino in Mauthausen he is mentioned as editor and international journalist. Op the tablet is also a verse of Friedrich Hölderlin:
'Ach, töten könnt ihr,
aber nicht lebendich machen'.
