Sara Hecht was a daughter of Samuel Hecht and Fanny Hanf. Her parents died when she was still a young girl. Sara Hecht was raised by the Bamberger family in Altona.

Sara Hecht was married to Baruch Gabriel van Perlstein. Her husband died in 1902. The couple had two children: Herman Leo van Perlstein and one child that survived the war.
