About Abraham Weijel

Gerrit van Werven, merchant and Verwalter (Managing Director) in Meppel, called the police presinct in his town mid October 1942 with the message that he had seen two people leave café Weber at the Zuideinde who looked Jewish but were not wearing a star. Agent Kroeskop was sent to check up on the situation and he arrested Abraham Weijel, cattle breeder. The latter declared to have escaped from Westerbork. He was locked up in a cell to be returned to Westerbork. Abraham Weijel managed to escape from his cell on 15 October 1942. Mayor Wisman got in touch with the Arnhem Zwolle Department of the Military Police and asked them to look out for the escapee. Sergeant Kraak and military policeman Buwalda caught Abraham Weijel at 6 am in the morning near Berkum on the Meppel-Zwolle road.

He was put on the train in Zwolle, collected from Meppel station by PC De Vries and taken to Westerbork by military policeman Huisman that very day. From there, he was deported to Auschwitz.
