Maurits Hertzberger studied medicine in Utrecht, where he sat for his medical finals on 15 November 1907. For some time, he was assistant to Professor G.C. Nijhoff in Groningen, after which he settled in Rotterdam at 32a Crooswijkschesingel.
Maurits Hertzberger was a member of the church council of the Dutch-Jewish Community in Rotterdam and governor of the Charity association Montefiore. On the day the Netherlands capitulated, he took his own life.

The funeral records at the Jewish cemetery in Rotterdam reveal that Maurits Hertzberger was buried there.
