Bertha (Bet) Izaaks Scholten was unmarried. She had a sweet shop next to the tram station in Gorredijk and often took in lodgers who worked for the Nederlandsche Tramweg Maatschappij (the tram company). She was a woman with fighting spirit, and along with the members of the Gorredijk chapter of the Vereniging voor Vrouwenkiesrecht (a women’s suffrage association), she took part in a large demonstration for women’s suffrage in 1916.
