Julia and Hedwig Falkenstein, together with another sibling, arrived in Rotterdam in 1939 as part of a Kindertransport [group of refugee children] from Germany. There they were placed in a children’s home with many other Jewish children. The two girls were then taken in by their uncle Eli Nathan Versteeg and his family. The entire Versteeg family was deported and died. The other child survived the war.
