Bertha van Gelder was a daughter of Leendert Joseph van Gelder and Henderina van Vriesland. She married Jacobus van Dam in Den Haag on 7 November 1923, who was previously married to Lena Visser. He was a son of Isaac van Dam and Alida Bronkhorst.
Bertha van Gelder was born in a family with ten children; one brother died young, eight years old in 1888; most likely, three of her brothers have survived the war, however not her siblings Joseph Leendert, Philip, Sander Leendert, Mietje and Rozetta; they have been killed during the Holocaust.
