About Jeannette van West-Elekan

Jeanette Elekan was the second wife of Jesaia van West, who was previously married to Wilhelmine Sluiter, who was born in Düsseldorf (G) as a daughter of Heimann Sluiter and Sophia Ert. Wilhelmine was born on 6 July 1864 and passed away childless at the age of 31 years in Amsterdam on 25 October 1895 and was interred in the Jewish Cemetery Zeeburg.

Jeanette Elekan, who was a daughter of Jonas Elekan and Leentje Polak, was born on 28 November 1861 in Amsterdam and married there Jesaia van West on 27 Autust 1896, a son of Philip van West and Sara Pais. However, Jesaia van West passed away on 12 March 1936 in Amsterdam and was interred in the Jewish Cemetery in Diemen. Also this marriage remained childless.

Jeanette van West-Elekan lived at Rijnstraat 60 in 1940, but moved still to hous nr. 23 2nd floor in the same street. At that address, the was registrated during the mandatory registration of all Jews in the Netherlands at the Jewish Council, and from there during the raid of 20 May 1943 arrested and carried off to Westerbork. Already fived days later, with more than 2860 other victims, deported to the extermination camp Sobibor. Upon arrival there on 28 May 1943 the entire transport, including Jeanette van West-Elekan, has been murdered in the gas chambers. There were no survivors.
