Johanna Polak was a daughter of Salomon Polak and Rosalia de Winter. After her mother died in 1935, Johanna took over the care for her father. Johanna Polak had a relationship with Hartog Gans, who died in a trafic-accident at the start of the war.
Amongst her three sisters and only brother Johanna was known as the most learned. She was also known to hear very well. When somewhere else in the parental house someone spoke about her, she called 'I can hear you!'
