Gerd Rolef was a son of Theo Rolef and Irene Mayer. In the 1930's he fled to the Netherlands, together with his two sisters. There he lived at the Nederlands Israëlitisch Jongensweeshuis (Dutch Jewish orphanage for boys), Megadle Jethomiem, in Amsterdam. His twin sister Ilse and their sister Edith both lived at the Nederlands-Israëlitisch Meisjesweeshuis (Dutch Jewish orphanage for girls). Their parents still lived in Germany. They were, like their children, deported and killed.
